How to start investing in PSX: a beginner's guide

A complete beginner's guide to investing in the Pakistan Stock Exchange. Open an account, pick your first stocks, track your portfolio.

If you’ve ever Googled “how do I buy stocks in Pakistan,” this guide is for you. Whether you have Rs 5,000 or Rs 5 million to invest, the steps are the same.

Step 1 — Open a brokerage account

You can’t buy PSX stocks directly. You need a brokerage account with a Pakistani broker registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP). Popular options include AKD Securities, Topline Securities, JS Global, AHL Online, and InvestPK.

You’ll need:

  • CNIC (Computerized National Identity Card)
  • Bank account
  • 2 passport-size photos
  • Proof of address (utility bill)
  • Initial deposit (often Rs 25,000 minimum, varies by broker)

Account opening takes 2–5 business days. Some brokers now offer digital onboarding through the CDC Investor Account.

Step 2 — Understand the basics

The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) lists ~530 companies. The headline index is the KSE-100, which tracks the 100 largest stocks by market cap. When people say “the market was up today,” they usually mean KSE-100.

Stocks are organised by sector — Cement, Banks, Energy, Fertilizer, Power, IT, Auto, Consumer, Textile. Each sector behaves differently to economic news (interest rates, oil prices, IMF programs, government policy).

Two things to learn early:

  • Circuit bands — PSX caps how far a share can move in one session: ±10% of the previous close, or Re 1, whichever is larger. The rupee floor matters for cheap scrips: a Rs 4 share can move a full rupee, which is 25%, not 10%. The band was 7.5% until 2024 and was widened in half-point steps to 10% by that July, so older guides still quote the old number. And hitting the band does not halt trading — the stock locks: orders outside the band are rejected and it trades only at the limit price, with a queue on one side and nobody on the other. A market-wide halt is a separate rule keyed to the KSE-30 — see circuit breakers and upper/lower locks.
  • Settlement — T+1 since February 2026 (it was T+2 before). Buy on Monday, ownership lands Tuesday.

Step 3 — Pick your first stocks (carefully)

Don’t bet your savings on a single stock. The safest first move for a Pakistani beginner is a diversified position across 4–6 KSE-100 heavyweights — names you can read about in the newspaper.

Common starter picks include:

  • LUCK — Lucky Cement, the largest cement maker
  • HBL — Habib Bank, the largest bank
  • OGDC — Oil & Gas Development Company, energy heavyweight
  • ENGRO — Engro Corporation, diversified conglomerate

None of this is investment advice — these are widely held by institutions, which is a different thing from “they will go up.” Read each company’s recent quarterly report before you buy.

Step 4 — Track your portfolio

Every trade you make should be logged somewhere. Brokers’ portals show your positions but make it hard to see:

  • Your weighted-average cost across multiple buys
  • Your unrealized vs. realized P&L
  • Sector concentration (you might be 80% in cement without realising)

This is what tools like Equivest exist for. Free, no card needed, built for PSX from day one.

Step 5 — Learn by watching

The fastest way to learn investing is to watch someone good do it. Follow Pakistani investors on Twitter/X. Read Profit Pakistan Today, Business Recorder, and Dawn Business. Join investor squads in the Equivest app — “First-Timers” is built for exactly this.

What to avoid in your first year

  • YOLO bets on penny stocks — high volatility, often manipulated, brutal way to learn
  • Margin trading — borrowing to buy stocks. Wait until you understand the basics cold.
  • Day trading — almost everyone loses. The boring “buy and hold” strategy beats it.
  • “Tips” from WhatsApp groups — if they had real edge, they wouldn’t share it for free

Start small, learn fast

Invest only what you can afford to lose. Start with Rs 20,000–50,000 to learn the muscle memory of buying, tracking, and selling. Scale up as you build confidence.

Welcome to PSX. May your first trade be a winner.
